No18 Interiors Style Guide: Edition 9
Interior styling is particularly subjective. One persons perception of ‘style’ can be the complete opposite of someone else’s and that’s what ultimately makes our homes so unique and diverse.
Technically speaking, when it comes to interior styling there is no right or wrong. Personal preference should always remain at the forefront of design decisions, but if you want to give your home that polished, stand out look; there are some key styling fundamentals to consider.
If followed, rest assured you’re well on your way to creating conversation starting, statement making interiors.
A PARTICULAR instagram account SPRINGS TO MIND WHEN IT COMES TO INTERIOR STYLING…
The home/ insta account in question belongs to a lady named Sue. Having had the pleasure of meeting Sue at her beautiful home, I can honestly say she is one of the most down to earth ladies I’ve ever met. She is warm, welcoming & friendly, yet particularly modest when discussing how she creates a truly inspirational home.
For those sat reading this blog thinking who the heck is Sue…Sue is the lady behind @noplacelikehome2018. The home insta account that leaves 170,000 of us swooning over her home & creativity on a daily basis.
In my opinion, Sue is one of the most naturally talented interior stylists I’ve ever come across and I wish she would believe me when I say it. But that’s the kind of humble, salt of the earth person she is.
As an interior designer myself, I’m always keen to understand what drives other designers decisions when it comes to styling homes and Sue’s craft is no different. I tasked Sue with restyling her hallway console table using various No18 products. After this, I asked Sue to break down her thought process to form her key principles of console styling…which we’ve shared below
Sue’s console styling principles
There are many styles of consoles available. An array of types to suit all homes. This is your first decision, finding the one you love that you can build upon with accessories
A mirror hung centrally behind at head height adds a frame to the area. A mirror is perfect for adding light and opening up any space
Place a large ginger jar as featured in my example, to one end and balance at the other with a tall vase. Vases come in all shapes and sizes, with interesting textures and patterns and they really do not need to break the bank. If the vase you choose is full of interest it will be enough standing empty. If plainer add some life with plants, either fresh or faux as per my example here
When sourcing other accessories bare in mind layering different textures and heights. Play with varying shapes and materials. Items grouped together in a trio work well. Odd numbers add interesting layers and stop to the space feeling flat. You could unite the objects with a tray.
Another favourite accessory is books. Stack them and use them to raise an object. Books will add interest and personality. What are your interests ? Fashion, travel, photography. Display them share your individuality, add an object of interest on top of the books. A sculptural object, something unique. Coral is a very popular example of the moment.
